'Brilliant' promises surprises

By Jeff Chung

"Brilliant Legacy," a new series starting tonight, promises to be full of Korean-style twists and drama.

You won't find top-tier celebrities featured in the series — the main male star Lee Sung Ki actually is a singer who has turned to acting — but the story line is great, and it's doing well in the Korean television ratings after 10 episodes.

The story line includes happy-go-lucky Eun Sung Go (played by Hyo Ju Han, "Spring Waltz"), who loses her mother at age 11 and gains an evil stepmother and unfriendly stepsister at 16. Eun Sung leaves to study culinary arts in the United States until she is suddenly called home with the news her father has been killed in a fire. As it turns out, her father isn't dead, but broke and rejected by his wife, who has taken the insurance money and has kicked Eun Sung and her autistic brother out of the house, forcing Eun Sung to work at a food cart to support them.

Eun Sung's luck changes when she helps a a woman who collapses in front of the food cart. The woman not only owns Jin Sung Food Co., but she's also the grandmother of Hwan Sunwoo, a spoiled brat who falls in love with Eun Sung.
