Big swell rolls onto south shores

High temperatures and high surf — what better way to spend a summer Sunday?

Grab your board today and head for the south shore beaches. Big waves are rolling in courtesy of the latest surf swell to hit the state.

And the sun will definitely be shining brightly. The National Weather Service said the high temperature hit 90 yesterday for the sixth day in a row. There's a strong chance today will see that string of sizzlers continue.

The weather service said the new swell arrived yesterday afternoon. Waves of 5 to 8 feet washed the south shore, and the surf is expected to be 6 to 9 feet today.

A high surf advisory, which is triggered by south shore waves of 8 feet or more, is in effect and the high waves are expected to last through tomorrow.

The advisory, which is in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow, is for the south shores of Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island as well.

Throngs of surfers bobbed in the southern surf yesterday, and crowds turned out on shore to watch them.

Forecasters said the swell is being caused by low-pressure systems in the southern Pacific near New Zealand and by storm systems near Easter Island.
