University of Hawai`i men’s basketball head coach Bob Nash announced the signings of two Division I transfers, Zane Johnson and Aleksandar Milovic.

Johnson, formerly of the University of Arizona, and Milovic, formerly of Duquesne University, both will have to sit out this upcoming season.

Johnson, a 6-5 guard from Phoenix, Ariz., was a member of Arizona’s last two NCAA Tournament teams, including a part-time starter on this past year’s Wildcat squad that advanced to the Sweet 16.

An outstanding long-range shooter, he ranked third on the club with 36 treys. Johnson started 11 contests in Pac-10 play when he averaged close to six points and shot a team-leading 41 percent from three-point range. He will have two years of eligibility with the Rainbow Warriors.

Johnson was a coveted prospect coming out of Thunderbird High School in Phoenix. He was rated as the No. 83 overall recruit on Sports Illustrated's Hot 100 Seniors and the No. 38 small forward prospect by Rivals.com. Johnson averaged 23.6 points and 7.8 rebounds and shot 44 percent from behind the arc as a senior en route to 4A first-team all-state and all-region honors.

“Zane is a gym rat who absolutely loves the game,” Nash said. “He teamed up with a number of NBA-caliber players at Arizona and he shares that same burning desire to take his game to the next level. He’ll be able to mature physically and mentally for a year and with his skill and work ethic should be a major contributor for us.”

Milovic, meanwhile, arrives in Hawai‘i after playing his freshman campaign at Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 6-foot-7, 220 pound swing player saw limited action with the Dukes, averaging 5.0 minutes in eight games played. With his size and shooting range, Milovic should bring added versatility to the Rainbow Warrior lineup. He has three years of eligibility left.

A native of Cetinje, Montenegro, Milovic averaged 21.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in his final season of high school. He finished second in the league in scoring, while leading his team to the league championship game. Milovic will be UH’s second-ever player from Montenegro. Predrag Savovic was an All-American for the ’Bows while playing from 1999-2002.

“Aleks reminds us of Predrag in his body-type, playing ability and the fact that he’ll have three years with us,” Nash said. “He’s athletic, has good size and the ability to shoot the three-pointer. Just like Zane, he’ll have a year to sit out, which will aid his development.”

Johnson and Milovic join Douglas Kurtz, Jeremy Lay and Dwain Williams to complete UH’s 2009-10 recruiting class.

“This class addresses both our short-term and long-term needs,” Nash said. “It gives us immediate help and at the same time sets us up for the future with such a large class graduating after next season.”
