Panel of 5 to help choose new chief

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Police Commission yesterday picked five community leaders to serve on a committee that will recommend the top candidates for police chief.

They are: Ed Hubennette, Marriott International vice president for North Asia, Hawai'i and the South Pacific; William "Buzz" Hong, head of the Hawai'i Building and Construction Trades Council; Ron Taketa, financial secretary for the Hawaii Carpenters Union; Tim Johns, Bishop Museum president and CEO; and Linda Wong, owner of World of Aloha.

The five were picked by a three-member subcommittee of the commission.

Police Commission Chairwoman Christine Camp said previously that the selection committee, working with the Department of Human Resources, will be expected to come up with a list of two to five finalists for the chief's post in the next three to four months.

The commission will then make those names public and pick a chief within a month of that, Camp said.

Current Chief Boisse Correa's five-year contract is up in late August, and the commission chose to not offer him a new contract.

Deputy Chief Paul Putzulu will serve as acting chief when Correa departs.

A community-based committee helped the Fire Commission pick Fire Chief Kenneth Silva in 2005.
