Sunset Beach's Lorne wins rodeo titles

Marin Lorne of Sunset Beach won first-place buckles for Barrel Racing and State Final All Around Girl at the Arkansas State High School Rodeo Association Finals, held June 11 to 14 in Searcy, Ark.

Lorne will be participating with the Arkansas team at the National high School Rodeo Finals which will be held July 19 to 25 in Farmington, New Mexico.

This is the fifth consecutive year Lorne has qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals. She was a member of the Hawai'i Team at the Nationals in 2005 and 2006 at Gallup, New Mexico, and 2007 and 2008 at Springfield, Illinois.

She completed her senior year of high school in Arkansas to take advantage of the opportunity the area offers in the sport.

PACWEST ACADEMIC AWARD TO BYUH

Brigham Young University Hawai'i athletes posted a 3.154 grade-point average during the recently completed school year to claim the PacWest Academic Achievement Award.

BYU-Hawai'i edged out Notre Dame de Namur University, which had a 3.139 gpa. As a conference, student athletes from the seven PacWest programs posted an overall combined 3.00 gpa.

MASSENBURG GETS GATORADE HONOR

Bailey Massenburg of King Kekaulike High School on Maui has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Hawai'i Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track. Massenburg is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced in June.

The state's reigning Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Massenburg won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.14 and the 1,500-meter run in 4:49.82 at the state track & field championships this season, leading the Na Ali'i to fourth place as a team.
