Hawaiian film to be shown Sunday at Maui Film Fest

Advertiser Staff

Maui Film Festival officials have announced that the Special Surprise Film showing Sunday at the SandDance Theater on Wailea Beach will be the world premiere of “Hawai'i A Voice For Sovereignty.”

Admission to the screening is complimentary and open to all. It will follow a “MauiStarShow,” a 20 minute tour of the night sky by Harriet Witt, the Maui Film Festival's Astronomer. The show starts at 8 p.m.
“Hawai'i A Voice for Sovereignty” is an 83-minute feature film documentary released this year, directed by Catherine Bauknight and executive produced by Aleck Cheney. The written narration/editor is Mark Alexander.
The film, shot over four years, is about native Hawaiians’ journey to sustain their culture, spirituality, and connection to the land, since the takeover in 1893. It contains rare interviews with Native Hawaiians in their homes, at sacred sites, in mountains and the rain forests throughout the islands.
