LOS ANGELES — Joe Torre got an opportunity to match wits with Sparky Anderson during his first two seasons as a big league manager in the late 1970s with the New York Mets, losing 14 of 20 games to the Cincinnati Reds.

In time, Torre got better at the job — and now he has more victories than the Hall of Famer. Torre earned his 2,195th regular-season win last night, taking over sole possession of fifth on the career list with the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

"If you told me a dozen years ago that I'd be in this rarefied air, I'd tell you you're full of baloney — because I certainly started way under .500 when I took over the Yankees in 1996," Torre said. "But I have to thank George Steinbrenner for putting me in a position to do this. I've admired what Sparky did for all those years, and I'm proud to be in that company."

Orlando Hudson homered, pinch-hitter Mark Loretta drove in the go-ahead run and Randy Wolf pitched six solid innings to help the Dodgers take the rubber game of the interleague series and improve to a major league-best 44-23.

"Joe passed another great man in Mr. Anderson. Just to be in uniform and be a part of this is a big deal," Hudson said. "He knows the game because he's played it and managed for so many years. He's got four World Series rings and tons of pennants, and he's gone to the playoffs year after year. That's the beauty of playing for somebody who understands the game and knows how hard it is."

Brad Ziegler (1-3) relieved Oakland starter Vin Mazzaro after six innings, giving up a one-out double in the seventh to James Loney and a walk to Russell Martin. Loretta, hitless in his previous 14 at-bats as a pinch hitter, singled to left field to snap a 2-2 tie.

Wolf allowed a run and five hits. Rookie Brent Leach (2-0) got the victory, getting Adam Kennedy to ground into an inning-ending double play in the seventh after Cory Wade gave up the tying run.

Wolf has 10 no-decisions in 15 starts this season. He allowed two hits over five innings in his previous start at Texas, but a power failure led to a 1-hour, 41-minute delay and the hard-luck left-hander did not return to the mound. The Dodgers scored all of their runs after the game resumed, and won 3-1.

CUBS 6, WHITE SOX 5

Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto hit consecutive homers to tie the game in a four-run eighth inning, then Alfonso Soriano singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Cubs over the White Sox.

BLUE JAYS 8, PHILLIES 7

Raul Chavez and Adam Lind hit homers early in the game and pinch-hitter Rod Barajas led off the top of the ninth with a tiebreaking homer as Toronto completed a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.

NATIONALS 3, YANKEES 0

After waiting out a 5 1/2-hour rain delay at the start, Craig Stammen (1-2) earned his first major league victory as last-place Washington beat New York in the first game without a homer at new Yankee Stadium.

ROCKIES 4, RAYS 3

Clint Barmes hit a two-run homer and Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez added solo short to help Ubaldo Jimenez (6-6) win his third straight start as host Colorado beat Tampa Bay for its 13th victory in 14 games.

PADRES 4, MARINERS 3

Adrian Gonzalez matched his career high with four hits, including a homer, and scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th as San Diego beat Seattle to end its major league-record interleague losing streak at 13.

TWINS 5, PIRATES 1

Nick Blackburn (6-2) pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game, and Michael Cuddyer and Brian Buscher hit home runs helping host Minnesota take two of three from Pittsburgh.

ORIOLES 5, METS 4

Aubrey Huff capped a two-run bottom of the ninth with a base-loaded single off Francisco Rodriguez (1-2), who entered with a 0.56 ERA and 16 saves in 17 tries, as Baltimore rallied past New York.

MARLINS 2, RED SOX 1

Dan Uggla and Ronny Paulino homered in the second inning, and Ricky Nolasco (3-6) pitched five innings before the game was called because of rain, giving visiting Florida a victory over Boston.

DIAMONDBACKS 12, ROYALS 5

Chris Young had four hits and Dan Haren (6-4) gave up two runs and seven hits over seven innings for his sixth victory in seven decisions to help visiting Arizona romp past Kansas City.

ASTROS 5, RANGERS 3

Hunter Pence led off the top of the eighth inning with a tiebreaking homer and Michael Bourn added a two-out RBI triple, helping visiting Houston, which had lost five straight to Texas, avoid a season sweep.

TIGERS 6, CARDINALS 3

Rookie Rick Porcello (8-4) allowed three runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings and visiting Detroit scored four in the first, then got solo shots from Placido Polanco and Marcus Thames in the eighth to beat St. Louis.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

BRAVES 7, REDS 0

Tommy Hanson (2-0) allowed three hits in six innings and also got his first major league hit and RBI, and Nate McLouth homered and drove in four runs, leading host Atlanta past Cincinnati.
