Soccer: Spain wins, but South Africa also goes through

Associated Press

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — Spain set an international soccer record with its 15th straight victory, a 2-0 win over South Africa on Saturday that allowed the host nation to scrape into the Confederations Cup semifinals along with the European champion.

Moments after missing a penalty kick, David Villa took a high cross on the chest in the 52nd minute and with perfect control, turned and shot past goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune for his 31st goal in 47 international appearances, 13 goals shy of Raul Gonzalez's Spanish record.

Fernando Llorente added a second goal in the 72nd in a goalmouth scramble off a cross from Xavi Hernandez.

Spain (3-0) finished first in Group A with six points, two ahead of South Africa (1-1-1). Iraq (0-1-2) was third with two points following a 0-0 tie with New Zealand (0-2-1). South African fans in the crowd of 38,212 at Free State Stadium celebrated.

Semifinal opponents will be determined by the results in Group B on Sunday, when the United States (0-2) plays Egypt (1-1) and Brazil (2-0) plays world champion Italy (1-1).

Spain broke a tie with Brazil, France and Australia, who all won 14 in a row. Spain also is unbeaten in 35 matches, tying the record set by Brazil from December 1993 to January 1996. Brazil's streak includes a loss on penalty kicks to Uruguay in the 1995 Copa America final, which is considered a tie in FIFA's records.
