UH doubles up on slots

The Hawai'i football team hit a double bonus on the slots yesterday, securing commitments from receivers Samson Anguay of Campbell High School and Corey Lau of Kailua High School.

Both will play slot for their varsity teams this year.

Anguay, who is 5 feet 8 and 155 pounds, was named to The Advertiser's 2008 Division II All-State first team.

At the Hawai'i Athletes In Action combine, Anguay ran 40 yards in 4.4 seconds.

Anguay also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.1 seconds) in the state track meet.

Lau, who is 5 feet 8 1/2 and 140 pounds, had a breakout performance at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance combine.

Lau placed first in the 40-yard dash (4.44 seconds), L-drill (6.60 seconds) and T-drill (3.91 seconds).

Lau also was the starting point guard for the Surfriders' Division II state championship basketball team.

Anguay and Lau are both long-time Warrior fans. Anguay said his role models were former UH slotbacks Chad Owens, Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins.

Several of Anguay's friends and relatives believed he should attend a Mainland college. But that changed after Anguay attended the Warriors' Junior Day in April. The event was considered an unofficial visit during which high school players could tour the school facilities and meet with academic advisers and counselors.

"After talking to some players who left (Hawai'i) and then came back, we knew staying home was the best decision," said his mother, Suzette Anguay.

Samson Anguay said: "UH is the place to be. I can get a good education, and I can play football. I have a chance to play in front of my family and friends."

Anguay said he aspires a career in physical therapy or sports medicine.

Lau had attended Saint Louis School before transferring to Kailua High last summer. He was on the 2007 junior-varsity championship team coached by Craig Stutzmann, now a UH graduate assistant coach in charge of the receivers.

"I loved working with coach Stutzmann," Lau said. "He's an awesome coach."

Lau also participates in unsupervised passing drills with several Saint Louis players every Sunday.

Lau competed in the UH football camp for skill players that concluded yesterday. When he got home, he received a message from a friend suggesting that he call the UH coaches. He did. That's when he received the scholarship offer.

"I'm excited about this," Lau said.

They are the second and third members of the Warriors' 2010 recruiting class. Earlier, offensive tackle Frank Loyd of Moanalua High pledged to sign with the Warriors.

BIG MAN'S FOOTBALL CAMP

The UH football team's Big Man's Camp runs Monday through Wednesday on the Manoa campus.

"We'll have two of the best coaches in the country — (UH's) Gordy Shaw and Dave Aranda," UH head coach Greg McMackin said.

The camp is for offensive and defensive linemen, and is open to ages 13 and older.

The walk-up fee is $75, which includes a T-shirt.

Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m.

The clinic is from 9 to 11 a.m.
