In this recruiting drive, the Hawai'i football team is collecting quality receivers.
Yesterday, the Warriors secured a commitment from wideout Christian "Bubba" Poueu-Luna, who is entering his senior year at Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif.
"I'm happy to be a Warrior," said Poueu-Luna, who is the third receiver to join the 2010 recruiting class.
On Friday, the Warriors received verbal commitments from slotbacks Corey Lau of Kailua High and Samson Anguay of Campbell High.
The past week, offensive tackle Frank Loyd of Moanalua High accepted a UH offer.
"I have family in Hawai'i — uncles, aunties and cousins," Poueu-Luna said.
One of his cousins is linebacker Starr Sua of Saint Louis School.
"I really like Hawai'i football program," Poueu-Luna said. "They have really good coaches."
Poueu-Luna, who is is 6 feet and 175 pounds, has played quarterback, wideout, defensive back and punter.
He set the school record in the 200-meter sprint, finishing in 21.6 seconds.
He has been timed at 10.9 seconds over 100 meters and 4.4 seconds over 40 yards.
At a combine, he completed the shuttle in 4.09 seconds.
His vertical jump was 32 1/2 inches.
Poueu-Luna projects to play wideout at UH.
"I really like Hawai'i's offense," Poueu-Luna said. "It's wide open."
Poueu-Luna drew interest from California and San Jose State. But he insisted "Hawai'i was always No. 1."
He enrolled in the past week's UH football camp for skill players with the intent of "making an impression."
But Poueu-Luna was told he already was on the Warriors' to-watch list of prospects.
After completing the camp Friday and leaving campus, he called the UH coaches. That was when he learned of the scholarship offer.
"I accepted right away," Poueu-Luna said. "I knew Hawai'i is where I wanted to be. I can see myself in a Warrior uniform."
Poueu-Luna should not have any academic hurdles. His cumulative grade-point average is 3.3.
Poueu-Luna goes by "Bubba," a nickname given to him by his father.
"He had (the nickname), too," Poueu-Luna said.
