Stephanie Kono tied for 6th; 8 other Isle girls competing in Publinx

Punahou School alum and UCLA golfer Stephanie Kono shot a 2-under-par 70 Monday and is tied for sixth at the Women’s Amateur Public Links at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.

Kono had the best score of the nine Hawai‘i golfers competing in the event.
Honolulu’s Kristina Merkle (35-37—72) is tied for 13th; Pearl City’s Mari Chun (36-39—75) is tied for 43rd; former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim (41-36—77) and Lihue’s Miki Oeoka (38-39—77) are tied for 61st; Honolulu’s Cyd Okino (37-41—78) is tied for 72; Honolulu’s Reiko Fujii (40-44—84) is tied for 130th; Wailuku’s Sannon Abarra (40-45—85) is tied for 139th; and Wailuku’s Kalea Heu (44-43—87) is tied for 143rd.
Kono had two birdies on the front to make the turn at 2-under 34. But she bogeyed the 10th and closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th to come in at 36.
The second round of stroke play is Tuesday, after which the field of 156 players will be trimmed to the top 64 for match play competition Wednesday through Saturday. The first round of match play will be Wednesday, the second and third rounds Thursday, quarterfinals and semifinals Friday and a 36-hole final Saturday.
Michelle Wie won this event as a 13-year-old in 2003 and finished second in 2004. Kim finished second in 2006. Lori Castillo won it in 1979 and 1980.
