CC Sabathia left the New York Yankees' game yesterday against Florida in the second inning with tightness in his left biceps.

A team trainer went out to watch Sabathia while he warmed up before the inning. He gave up a one-out double to Brett Carroll, then manager Joe Girardi and a trainer came out to check on the left-hander again before taking him out of the game.

The team said Sabathia is day to day and that no tests are planned.

Sabathia gave up one run and three hits in 1 1/3 innings. He entered 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA.

The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner, Sabathia was the Yankees' biggest offseason pitching acquisition. He signed a $161 million, seven-year contract with New York after spending 2008 with Cleveland and Milwaukee.

HOWARD RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

Ryan Howard was released from the hospital yesterday but did not play for the Philadelphia Phillies against Baltimore, ending his consecutive games streak at 343.

Howard was hospitalized Saturday for the second time in two nights with flu symptoms. The slugger was released yesterday but was not at the ballpark for Philadelphia's 2-1 loss to the Orioles.

Howard had a CT scan and needed antibiotics. He might have a sinus infection, Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said.

The 2006 NL MVP had played 343 straight games since May 25, 2007, the longest active streak in the majors.

Howard also went to the hospital after Friday's game. He was not expected to play Saturday, but he returned to the ballpark and delivered a pinch-hit, three-run homer that put Philadelphia ahead in the seventh inning. The Orioles rallied for a 6-5 victory.

STRUGGLING MATSUZAKA PLACED ON DL

Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the 15-day disabled list and could be sidelined much longer.

"This is not going to be a two-week DL," manager Terry Francona said. "We have to figure this out. We have a lot of work ahead of us to get him back to being Daisuke."

In eight starts, Matsuzaka is 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .378. Last season, he was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a major league-best .211 batting average by opponents.

More Phillies: Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge expects to be activated off the disabled list this week now that his right knee is close to full strength. Lidge said he'd make at least one more rehab appearance, tomorrow for Class-A Clearwater, then either be activated Wednesday, or if a third rehab appearance is needed, on Friday in Toronto.

Yankees: New York pitcher A.J. Burnett's suspension for throwing high and tight to Texas' Nelson Cruz has been reduced to five games from six. Burnett sailed a fastball near Cruz's head during a 12-3 win June 2. Earlier in the game, Texas' Vicente Padilla twice hit Mark Teixeira with pitches.

Cubs: Chicago placed reliever Angel Guzman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right triceps and recalled pitcher Kevin Hart from Triple-A Iowa.
