Friday is deadline to use state's tax amnesty program

Advertiser Staff

The state Tax Department is reminding people they have until Friday to take advantage of its tax amnesty program that shields them from penalties and possibly criminal prosecution.

The program, open to people who have undisclosed or underreported Hawaiçi taxes, allows them to make payment along with 4 percent interest to wipe out their liability. The amnesty is available for all taxes overseen by the state, including income, general excise, transient accommodations and use tax.
The state began offering the one-month long amnesty program on May 27 as it looked for ways to get a quick tax revenue gain. At least seven other states are offering amnesty programs this year to help with budget shortfalls. Hawaiçi’s “Fresh Start” program ends on June 26.
Those who want to take advantage of the amnesty program should visit www.Hawaii.gov/tax to determine if they are eligible and file all required returns for the applicable period. This along with a check for the full amount and interest has to be postmarked or submitted to the department on or before June 26.
Those who participate in the program also relinquish their rights to judicial and administrative appeals.
