Friday is tax amnesty deadline

The state Tax Department is reminding people they have until Friday to take advantage of its tax amnesty program that shields them from penalties and possibly criminal prosecution.

The program, open to people who have undisclosed or underreported Hawai'i taxes, allows them to make payment along with 4 percent interest to wipe out their liability. The amnesty is available for all taxes overseen by the state, including income, general excise, transient accommodations and use tax.

The state began offering the one-month amnesty program on May 27 as it looked for ways to boost tax revenues. Those who participate in the program relinquish their rights to judicial and administrative appeals.

NEW LAHAINA MCDONALD'S IN WORKS

LAHAINA, Maui — McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii Inc. is planning a $1.2 million project to demolish its Lahaina restaurant and replace it with a new 4,365-square-foot facility.

The new McDonald's will be one of the first worldwide to embody in its interior design the company's new theme of "Forever Young," according to a draft environmental assessment filed with the state Office of Environmental Quality Control. The exterior design will honor the historical architectural character of Lahaina town, and native plants will be used in the landscaping, the report said.

The restaurant was built in 1983 at the corner of Papalaua and Waine'e streets, within the Lahaina National Historic Landmark District. Construction is expected to take five to six months.

A&B SELLS PEARL CITY WAREHOUSES

Alexander & Baldwin Inc. said it has sold a Pearl City warehouse complex.

The Honolulu-based company did not disclose the sale price or the buyer.

A&B acquired the property known as Hawaii Business Park in 1999 from Tosei Shoji Co. Ltd. A&B said it increased rental proceeds by 92 percent over the past decade and has kept the 85,200-square-foot complex fully occupied since 2002.
