Volleyball hits beach in Waikiki

A spot in the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open is on the line tomorrow at the Barefoot Wing AVPNext Championship on Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

AVPNext is a series that draws players from amateur beach volleyball leagues in 16 cities. Winners of the local series play for a chance to compete against the pros in San Francisco Aug. 13.

A women's and a men's team from tomorrow's event will earn the trip to San Francisco. This is the fifth and final stop of the Hawai'i series. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. with finals scheduled around 4 p.m.

Evan Silberstein and Trevor Crabb currently lead the men's division, and Kai Lee and Kate Lemish the women's division.

There is no admission charge for spectators. An awards party follows at 6 p.m. at Red Lions on Kalakaua, with specials for players and fans.

GET UP TO SPEED THIS WEEKEND AT UH

The summer session for Hawai'i Speed and Quickness will be held this weekend at the University of Hawai'i's Klum Gym.

Each session is $10, and open to all ages.

Sessions are from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m.

Former and current UH athletes serve as instructors. Drills involve plyometrics and resistance workouts.

Here's the schedule: June 27 and 28, July 11 and 12, July 18 and 19, and July 25 and 26.

WATER POLO

BROOKS, CHANEY TO HELP COACH U.S.

There aren't any Hawai'i players among the 14 women named to the USA Water Polo Senior National Team, but Hawai'i's Brandon Brooks and Aaron Chaney were named assistants to head coach Adam Krikorian for the 2009 FINA World Championships, which begin July 19 in Rome.

The roster includes 12 Olympians and 10 members of the 2007 World Championship squad that won gold in Melbourne, Australia.

The team recently won the gold medal at the FINA World League Super Final in Kirishi, Russia. Team USA opens with Kazakhstan in the World Championships before meeting Russia and Greece in pool play.
