Warriors to keep Curry

Rumors were circulating Golden State might trade former Davidson star Stephen Curry, the No. 7 overall pick.

Stephen Curry can get comfortable with the Golden State Warriors. Coach Don Nelson isn't sending his newest high-scoring guard anywhere else.

Nelson firmly declared the Warriors won't trade Curry yesterday, quashing suspicions about Golden State's intentions in selecting the former Davidson star who led the nation in scoring last season.

"He can unpack his bags and relax," Nelson said after welcoming Curry to Oakland. "He can buy a house. We drafted him because we think he's a terrific player that fits right into our program. He ain't going anyplace."

Curry seemed an odd choice for the Warriors. After all, guard Monta Ellis is just about the same size and plays much the same style of game, and Golden State is loaded with backcourt players.

Many wondered whether Golden State drafted Curry with the seventh overall pick at another team's behest, and rumors about trade talks with Phoenix were rampant Thursday night.

Although Curry repeatedly said he hoped to land with the New York Knicks, who picked eighth, he was neither surprised nor disappointed when Golden State snatched him.

"I looked at the top 10, and (the Warriors) jumped off the page with the way they play," Curry said. "I'm a fan of the game, so I notice these sorts of things. I've seen enough of them to know I'd fit in here, at least on the surface.

TIMBERWOLVES

SPAIN'S RUBIO SKIPS PRESS CONFERENCE

Ricky Rubio was not present when Minnesota introduced its 2009 draft class yesterday.

Sixth overall pick Jonny Flynn and 28th pick Wayne Ellington attended with new president David Kahn. But the Timberwolves say Rubio decided to stay behind because of his contract situation.

The Wolves took Rubio with the fifth overall pick, but it's not clear when he'll be able to play in Minnesota. He has a $6.6 million buyout from his Spanish professional team. Both he and Kahn said Rubio may have to play at least one more year in Spain before coming to the NBA.

Magic: Hedo Turkoglu's run with Orlando appears to be over. A day after the Magic acquired Vince Carter from New Jersey, Turkoglu's agent said yesterday that he sent a notice to Orlando earlier this week that his client will opt out of his contract to become a free agent. Agent Lon Babby said the Magic had made Turkoglu an initial offer that Orlando general manager Otis Smith described as a "jumping off point."

Cavaliers: Shaquille O'Neal hasn't picked out a house in Cleveland yet. He has chosen a jersey number — his old one. Shaq is going back to No. 33. Traded to Cleveland on Thursday, the 15-time All-Star has decided to wear 33, the team confirmed yesterday. That's the number O'Neal wore in high school and at LSU.

Jazz: Utah has made a qualifying offer to forward Paul Millsap, giving the team the right to match any other offers he receives as a restricted free agent. Millsap averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season, playing mostly as a reserve.
