Use fans to cut down on electric bill

Here are some ways to stay comfortable and still curb power use during the long, hot summer from South Carolina electric providers:

Set the thermostat between 78 and 80 degrees and use ceiling fans to move the air.

For central heating and cooling systems, keep the fan on "auto" to lower the humidity inside the house.

Install a programmable thermostat.

Turn off lights, computers and televisions when not in use.

Set water heater at 120 degrees and consider washing clothes in cold water.

'STORIES OF ALOHA'

WRITER'S COLUMNS COMPILED FOR BOOK

Well-known Honolulu writer Jocelyn Fujii has collected her popular columns from Spirit of Aloha magazine, defunct since Aloha Airlines shut down in 2008, in "Stories of Aloha."
