Fishing vessel capsizes, two aboard swim ashore safely

Advertiser Staff

A fishing boat carrying two men capsized outside of Kikiaola Boat Harbor yesterday, forcing both men to swim to shore.

A Kekaha man and a friend from Waimea had gone fishing in a 12- to 14-foot Livingston boat Saturday at around 4 p.m. They were headed back when the boat capsized around 4 a.m. yesterday.

The Kaua'i Fire Department, its Air-1 helicopter, Kaua'i Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were all called at 7:09 yesterday morning when a caller said a boat was stuck on a reef about 350 yards offshore from a popular Kekaha surfing spot known as Davidson's.

The search was called off after the men checked in with police upon hearing sirens and seeing emergency vehicles in the area.
