Urban and East Honolulu’s population remained largely unchanged last year, at 374,676, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The population for the Honolulu CDP (census-designated place) was up a slight 0.2 percent — or 588 people — from the July 1, 2007, estimate. The Honolulu CDP extends from Red Hill to Makapuçu.
The population for the rest of Oçahu was up 0.7 percent, to 530,358, an increase of nearly 4,000 residents.
From 2000 to 2008, the Honolulu CDP population increased 0.8 percent, while the rest of the island experienced a 5 percent increase, according to census estimates.
Honolulu CDP ranked 211th in terms of percentage change in population among U.S. cities with 100,000 or more residents. Tops was New Orleans, which grew 8.2 percent in 2008.
On the Neighbor Islands, Hawaiçi County saw 1.8 percent growth in its population from 2007 to 2008, to 175,784 residents, according to the census estimates. Maui County, with a population of 143,574, and Kauaçi, with 63,689 residents, each experienced 1.5 percent growth.
Seventy percent of the state’s 1.29 million residents live on Oçahu.
