Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach won the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure junior pro surfing contest yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

The final day of the two-day event was completed in 1- to 2-foot waves near the famous South Huntington Beach Pier.

Asing, 16, topped a field that included the nation's top surfers age 20 and younger.

"I'm so excited," Asing said. "I never thought I'd make the final, but I just kept chipping away and did what I had to do to make the final."

Asing was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the four-man final. His two best waves received a total score of 13.0 (out of 20). Dillon Perillo of California was second with a score of 11.0.

"There weren't too many waves, but I just tried to wait my turn and get the best waves I could," Asing said. "Luckily, it worked out."

Asing upset Maui's Kai Barger — the defending junior pro world champion — in the quarterfinals.

The contest offered maximum points toward qualification for the World Junior Championships. Asing has emerged as the No. 1 qualifier from Hawai'i.

"I'm really happy with my results this year," he said. "I'm getting on a roll this year and I just want to keep it going."

He received $3,500 for the victory.

TIE IN SOUTH AFRICA

The women's division of the Mr. Price Pro finished in a 24-way tie yesterday because the contest could not be completed within the allotted dates due to rough conditions at Ballito, South Africa.

Six Hawai'i surfers were among the 24: Megan Abubo, Alana Blanchard, Leilani Gryde, Bethany Hamilton, Coco Ho and Carissa Moore. They each received $1,000.

The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series, and offered points toward qualifying for the 2010 World Tour.

"It's a shame. I flew all the way across the world to get here and only got to put the singlet on once," Ho said. "With everyone splitting the points, it's not going to matter to our position on the ratings."

Ho and Moore are currently tied for No. 1 on the 2009 women's World Qualifying Series.

ON HOLD IN BRAZIL

The Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro men's contest was postponed yesterday due to poor conditions off Brazil.

Hawai'i surfers Kekoa Bacalso, Dustin Barca and Roy Powers have advanced to the third round.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the second round. The contest is the fourth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.
