UH women fifth in WAC swimming and diving

Sparked by the performances its of divers, the University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team finished fifth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday in San Antonio, Texas.

Junior Emma Friesen, who won the 1- and 3-meter events earlier in the week, was named WAC Diver of the Year. UH's Mike Brown was voted Coach of the Year for the fourth straight year, and junior Raquel Bartlow won the platform event yesterday to give the Rainbow Wahine a sweep of the three diving disciplines.

Bartlow scored 263.90 points to easily outdistance second-place Candice Minette of Nevada, who had 211.20.

Senior Elliko Heimbach was third in the 200 butterfly, finishing with an NCAA provisional time of 1:58.16.

Nevada topped the nine-team field with 639 points to win its third straight WAC title. Northern Arizona (623) was second, followed by New Mexico State (572), San Jose State (511.5) and Hawai'i (463.5).

UH MEN PLACE SECOND

The University of Hawai'i men's swimming and diving team finished second for the third straight year at the Conference USA Championships yesterday in Houston.

SMU topped the five-team field with 921 points. UH had 769, followed by East Carolina (542), North Dakota (442) and Bakersfield (421).

Senior Nicola Xella won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:00.26 yesterday. The Rainbow Warriors also got second-place finishes from Lazar Bogdanovski in the 200 back (1:47.87), Davis Kane in the 100 free (44.55) and Douglas Cohen in the platform dive (299.45 points).


TRACK AND FIELD

UH FINISHES FIFTH

The University of Hawai'i women's indoor track and field team, led by multi-event specialist Annett Wichmann, finished fifth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday in Nampa, Idaho.

Louisiana Tech, which edged UH by one point to win last year's title, won the final event of the meet yesterday to edge Idaho, 120-114, after the Vandals led by a point entering the 4 x 400-meter relay. Host Boise State (112) placed third, followed by Utah State (92.5) and Hawai'i (72.5).

Wichmann, who was named the co-Outstanding Field Performer after scoring points in five events, placed third in the triple jump yesterday with 38 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Teammate Emily Sheppard was second with 39-2 1/4.

Wichmann (pentathlon) and Amber Kaufman (high jump) are likely to receive spots in the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks.


BASEBALL

HPU SWEEPS HILO

Daniel Cox pitched a four-hitter and Hawai'i Pacific scored twice in the top of the sixth to beat host Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, and complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.

Cox struck out three and walked two for the Sea Warriors (11-1, 3-1), who got an RBI groundout by Sebastiaan Nooij and a run-scoring single from Cheynne Hirota in the sixth.

Thomas Brown had two hits, including an RBI single, for the Vulcans (5-6, 1-3).

In the opener, Turhan Folse took a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh then weathered a five-run Hilo outburst as HPU held on for a 7-5 victory.

After Folse yielded a three-run homer to Keoni Manago, Nick Alexander relieved and walked a batter before getting the final out.


SOFTBALL

UH TAKES TWO

Clare Warwick hit a three-run homer and a grand slam as the University of Hawai'i beat Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education, 9-3, last night in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Amanda Tauali'i added four hits, including a two-run homer, for UH (5-11), which is 3-0 in tournament play.

Earlier, Stephanie Ricketts pitched a two-hitter, fellow freshman Dara Pagaduan had four hits and three RBIs and Tauali'i hit a two-run homer as UH beat Western Carolina, 6-0.

The tournament continues today, starting at 10 a.m.

HPU SWEEPS BYUH

Sherise Musquiz scattered six hits with four strikeouts and Ciera Senas hit a solo homer and run-scoring single as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 6-1, to complete a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep at BYUH softball field.

Maile Kim added two hits, including an RBI double, for the Sea Warriors (13-1, 4-0). Ivy Sessions had two hits for the Seasiders (5-11, 1-3).

In the opener, Courtney Kessell pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and Krystal Plunkett had a solo homer and RBI double in HPU's 3-1 victory.
