Hannemann's budget seeks increases in some taxes, fees

Mayor Mufi Hannemann presented a $1.81 billion operating budget to the City Council this afternoon that asks for increases in taxes and fees.

Hannemann's office said his budget reduces an expected $128 million revenue shortfall to $50 million through spending restrictions, a hiring freeze and other budgeting decisions.

Hannemann asked the council for increases in the motor vehicle weight tax, highway beautification fee, city bus fares, municipal golf course green and cart fees, zoo entrance and parking fees, park attendant fees, alarm permit fees, special duty police fees and Hanauma Bay admission fees.

Single adult bus fares would rise from $2 to $2.25 and monthly passes from $40 to $50 under the mayor's proposal.

The spending plan also asks the council to raise the residential real property tax rate from $3.29 to $3.59 per $1,000 of assessed value.
