Don't recycle it, "upcycle" it.

That's what supporters of La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls are doing for this year's Hoopla scholarship fundraiser, "Upcycled and Fresh," March 14 on the school grounds at 2933 Poni Mo'i Road in Waikiki.

The theme is green with a save-the-date card made from recycled plastic, table settings for the more than 300 guests fashioned from old and repurposed china, glass, silverware and linens (these will be put up for bid), a fashion show featuring La Pietra students wearing outfits made from repurposed materials and both silent and live auctions including a number of eco-friendly items. For example, one of the items to be auctioned is a backyard chicken coop built of recycled materials; La Pietra supporter Dawn McNaughton has been harvesting fresh eggs daily from a pair of brown pullets, Penny and Bertha, and is eager to teach others how to do the same.

Tickets are $275, including dinner and dancing.
