The body of an unidentified man was found at a playground area in the Makalapa housing area at Naval Station Pearl Harbor shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday morning.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the case.

11 RESCUED AFTER CANOES TIP OVER

Honolulu firefighters rescued 11 people around the Mokulua islets off Windward O'ahu when two canoes were swamped by a large wave yesterday.

Several people reported minor cuts and scrapes but did not have to be hospitalized, said fire Capt. Robert Main.

He described the conditions at Kailua Beach as "very windy and very cold."

The canoes and a boat were crossing Kailua Bay near the Mokuluas just after 11 a.m. when the canoes were knocked over, throwing 11 people into the ocean, Main said.

A male and a female paddler initially were thought missing but the man swam to the Mokuluas and the woman was taken there by a passing kayaker, Main said.

The canoes were later righted, lashed together and brought to shore.

"One was pretty beat up on the reef," Main said.

In a separate incident nearby at 11:23 a.m., a windsurfer was reported in distress off Flat Island until city lifeguards brought him safely to shore, Main said.

MOTORCYCLIST HURT IN WAIKIKI CRASH

A motorcyclist was seriously injured when he apparently ran a red light and collided with a taxi van at the intersection of Kuhio Avenue and Ka'iulani Avenue in Waikiki yesterday afternoon.

The man, reported to be in his 50s, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and was later upgraded to serious condition.

The collision stalled traffic in the area as police closed off Kanekapolei Street and one westbound lane of Kuhio.

MAN STABBED IN WAHIAWA

A man was stabbed by an unknown assailant who escaped Saturday night in Wahiawa, police said.

According to a police report, the victim and a friend were drinking beer in a shack at about 11 p.m. when they heard a noise outside. The man went outside to investigate and was attacked and stabbed in the arm. He ran back inside the shack, followed by the assailant who stabbed him again then fled, police said.

The man flagged down a police car, was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
