Tube Notes: 'Reaper,' 'American Idol'

Television critic Mike Hughes doesn't find any "must-sees" in tonight's line-up, but if you want to turn on the TV, here's what you might want to watch:

"REAPER" SEASON-OPENER, 7 P.M., CW

Not much has gone right for the struggling CW lately. Its one new, mid-season show ("13") barely drew a shrug.

Fortunately, the network had this fairly enjoyable series on the shelf. It opens tonight -- two weeks earlier than first announced -- with plans to air new episodes for 13 straight weeks.

This starts with Sam, Sock and Ben (Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine and Rick Gonzalez) returning from vacation, to bad news. They've lost their jobs at the Work Bench. They've been evicted from their apartment. Also, Andi (Missy Peregrym) is still mad at Sam.

Then there's the ongoing problem: Due to a contractual obligation from his parents, Sam has to go capture escaped souls for Satan.

Complicating things, "Reaper" will spend the entire season going against "American Idol." Sam is sort of trapped between Satan and Simon Cowell.

"AMERICAN IDOL," 7-9 P.M., FOX

There's one more batch of 12 contestants for viewers to get a closer look at.

They'll perform tonight and viewers will vote. On Wednesday, we'll learn which three are going to the next round.

That will give the show nine of its final 12. On Thursday, the judges sift through rejects to choose the other three.
