Boxing: Kronk Gym star dies of stroke in Michigan home

Associated Press

MELVINDALE, Mich. (AP) — Former boxer Mickey Goodwin, who trained under Emanuel Steward at the famed Kronk Gym, died of a stroke at his home near Detroit.

Melvindale police Lt. Chad Hayes said the 51-year-old Goodwin's body was found about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the home he shared with his mother and stepfather.

Hayes said an autopsy Wednesday revealed Goodwin suffered a stroke and fell down the stairs, giving the appearance he was bludgeoned. Hayes said Goodwin appears to have taken a shower and gone to bed before he died.

Goodwin worked with Steward at Detroit's iconic gym, where Steward also trained Thomas Hearns and Hilmer Kenty. Goodwin won the Golden Gloves title in 1975 and turned pro two years later, compiling a 40-2-1 record with 28 knockouts.
