Police chief Phillips announces retirement

Maui County Police Chief Thomas Phillips announced he will retire on June 1 after 33 years with the department.

Phillips has served 11 years as chief. He joined MPD in 1976 and worked as a sergeant in the Criminal Investigation and Vice divisions. A promotion to lieutenant in 1988 led to a one-year assignment on Moloka'i before Phillips took over as narcotics commander of the Vice Division.

He returned to Moloka'i as a captain in 1990 and was promoted to major a year later. In 1995, Phillips was elevated to the post of assistant chief and commander of the Support Services Bureau. He was promoted to deputy chief in 1996 and was named chief in 1998.

The county Police Commission will meet Monday to discuss the process of selecting the next police chief.
