Running: Radcliffe out of London Marathon with broken toe

Associated Press

LONDON — World record-holder Paula Radcliffe pulled out of next month's London Marathon on Thursday because of a broken toe.

The 35-year-old Briton, a three-time winner in London, hurt the second toe on her right foot during altitude training in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday.

Radcliffe hasn't competed in London since winning her third title in 2005.

"I am desperately disappointed that I have to pull out of this year's race," Radcliffe said, "especially as I was looking forward to running in front of the amazing crowds of spectators in London that always offer such great support."

Radcliffe missed the 2006 race because of the birth of her daughter and her comeback the following year was delayed because of a back problem. She withdrew last year because of an injury to the same foot that has ruled her out this time.
