Baseball: Without A-Rod, Dominicans lose to Cardinals 4-1

JUPITER, Fla.— Without Alex Rodriguez, the Dominican Republic's lineup had little pop Thursday.

The Dominicans totaled only five hits in their final exhibition game before the World Baseball Classic and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1.

The Dominicans will need to get used to being without Rodriguez, who played for them in one game before being ruled out of the WBC on Thursday because of a torn labrum in his right hip.

"We lost a big bomber on our team, a guy who can really hit," Dominican captain Moises Alou said. "We were really counting on him. He would have made this lineup a lot better."

Five Cardinals pitchers stymied the Dominicans. Starter Todd Wellemeyer allowed four hits and one run in four innings.
