Red Cross to provide assistance to families affected by Wai'anae fire

The American Red Cross Hawai'i State Chapter is assisting at least four families today affected by a Wai'anae apartment building fire.

No one was injured in the 9 a.m. Thursday. fire at 85-934 Lihue St. Several residents complained of breathing problems, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The fire originated in the rear of a second-floor apartment and affected a first- and third-floor apartment, Seelig said. The cause is still under investigation, he said. Firefighters estimate the damages at $200,000.

The Red Cross provided the affected families with clothing, shoes, food and bedding. The apartment building was able to move two families into vacant apartments. The fire was on McArthur Street. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected int he coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed.
