A Kauai couple has been sentenced to jail for insurance fraud and theft, the Hawaii Insurance Division said today in a news release.

Clifford Cabinatan and Kelly Teves-Cabinatan stole more than $6,000 from GEICO Casualty in 2006 by intentionally damaging their vehicle and then filing a vandalism claim.

Clifford Cabinatan pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of insurance fraud. He was sentenced to one year in jail and five years probation. He also will have to do community service, repay GEICO and pay court fines and fees.

Kelly Teves-Cabinatan pleaded guilty to the same charges. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years of probation. She also will have to pay restitution and court fines and fees.
