HILO
30-year sentence for man in kidnap, shooting case

A state judge sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the kidnapping and shooting of a Kurtistown woman in July 2007.

Under a plea agreement, Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara sentenced Rodney Dean Bohol to 20 years for kidnapping and 10 years each for first-degree assault and possession of firearms as a convicted felon. The two 10-year sentences are to run concurrently but consecutively to the kidnapping conviction.

Bohol, 36, and co-defendants Jody Lassen and Danolin Souza were convicted of beating a 23-year-old woman and forcing her into the trunk of a car.

They drove her to a remote area of Waiohinu, bound her to a tree with duct tape and shot her numerous times with a shotgun loaded with birdshot.

They left the victim to die. She freed herself and wandered for five days in the forest before county workers found her. She was treated at Kona Community Hospital.
