No. 2 Stanford clinches tie for Pac-10 crown

STANFORD, Calif. — Jeanette Pohlen scored a career-high 21 points, including two free throws in the final seconds, as No. 2 Stanford held on to defeat Arizona, 70-67, and clinch a share of the Pac-10 regular-season championship.

Stanford (25-4, 16-1) has either won outright or shared the Pac-10 regular-season title for nine straight seasons. The Cardinal can win the 2008-09 crown outright tomorrow with a victory over No. 18 Arizona State.

Stanford, which got 16 points from Kayla Pedersen, won its 28th consecutive game at Maples Pavilion.

Dymond Simon had 15 points and Danielle Orsillo added 13 to help the visiting Sun Devils (23-6, 15-2 Pac-10) upset the Bears (23-5, 14-3) for their school-record 15th straight victory.

NO. 10 TEXAS A&M 79, OKLAHOMA STATE 49

Takia Starks and Tanisha Smith scored 18 points each and the host Aggies (23-5, 11-4 Big 12) led throughout in routing the Cowgirls (15-13, 4-11).

NO. 19 TENNESSEE 68, ALABAMA 49

Shekinna Stricklen scored 16 points as the Lady Vols (21-9) beat the Tide (13-17) in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament at North Little Rock, Ark.

NO. 24 VIRGINIA 66, VIRGINIA TECH 57

Aisha Mohammed had 16 points and 16 rebounds to help the Cavaliers (23-8) hold off the Hokies (12-18) in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Greensboro, N.C.

NO. 11 VILLANOVA 97, PROVIDENCE 80

Scottie Reynolds scored 23 points to help the Wildcats (25-6, 13-5 Big East) beat the Friars (18-12, 10-8) and finish with 13-0 home record.

NO. 17 XAVIER 76, DAYTON 59

Dante Jackson scored his team's first 11 points for a lead that held, and the host Musketeers (24-5, 12-3) beat the Flyers (24-6, 10-5) for their third straight Atlantic 10 regular-season championship.

NO. 20 UCLA 79, OREGON STATE 54

Josh Shipp scored a career-high 27 points and the host Bruins (23-7, 12-5 Pac-10) built a 24-point first-half lead on the way to routing the Beavers (13-15, 7-10).

STANFORD 74, NO. 21 ARIZONA STATE 64

Landry Fields scored 20 points and Anthony Goods added 15 as the visiting Cardinal (17-11, 6-11 Pac-10) handed the Sun Devils (21-8, 10-7) their third straight loss.

PENN STATE 64, NO. 23 ILLINOIS 63

Talor Battle hit a driving shot with 0.3 seconds left to cap the host Nittany Lions' (21-9, 10-7 Big Ten) rally from a 10-point deficit to upset the Illini (23-8 11-7).

BOISE STATE 79, FRESNO STATE 65

Kurt Cunningham scored 15 points and Mark Sanchez had 13 points and eight rebounds, leading the host Broncos (19-10, 9-6 Western Athletic Conference) past the Bulldogs (12-19, 3-12).

NEVADA 89, SAN JOSE STATE 66

Brandon Fields scored 20 points, Luke Babbitt added 19, and the host Wolf Pack (18-11, 10-5 WAC) used a 19-5 second-half run to beat the Spartans (13-15, 6-9).

IDAHO 66, LOUISIANA TECH 58

Trevor Morris scored 14 points, Mac Hopson added 13, all in the second half, and the host Vandals (15-14, 8-7) beat the Bulldogs (12-19, 6-10), who stayed close behind Kyle Gibson's 25 points.
