Basketball fans and Asian-American history buffs might want to catch a special screening of the documentary "Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story."

Misaka, a Nisei from Utah, became the first Asian-American professional basketball player when he was a first-round draft pick for the New York Knicks in 1947.

The Japanese Cultural Center will show the film at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. today. Filmmakers Bruce Alan Johnson and Christine Toy Johnson will be on hand to introduce the film.

The film is free for members of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i and $5 for everyone else. Seating is first come, first served and the Gallery Theatre holds a maximum of 50 seats.
