Cheech & Chong to perform at Waikiki Shell in May

Advertiser Staff

The reunited comedy team Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are bringing their "Light Up America" tour to the Waikiki Shell on May 28, Live Nation promoters announced today.

Tickets go on sale at 4:20 p.m. Saturday at www.livenation.com. For more information on the tour and presale tickets go to www.cheechandchongtour.com.

This is Cheech & Chong's first tour in more than 25 years. But at one point, from 1972 to 1985, they defined an era with their irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holds-barred comedy routines.

The made nine comedy albums and were nominated four times for Grammys, winning one in 1973 for Best Comedy Album with their third album, Los Cochinos, released in 1973.

The Live Nation produced tour kicked off last year in September at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia and has already taken them to New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Detroit, Atlanta, Miami, Minneapolis, Houston, Dallas Phoenix, Austin, Seattle, Boston, San Diego and Denver.

Chong's wife and comedy partner, Shelby Chong, is the opener on all dates.

Other highlights:

• Big Bambu, their second album, was the biggest selling comedy record of all time in 1972.

• In 1978, "Up In Smoke," the first of eight movies, grossed more than $100 million at the box office, the most of any comedy that year.
