It rains a lot in Hilo, but the rain there this past Sunday was the exception rather than the rule.

Some 7.13 inches of rain fell on Hilo from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

That shattered the previous record for March 8, which had been 4.64 inches, recorded in 2006.
