KANE'OHE
Heavy rains, flooding disrupt Windward roads

Heavy rains last night prompted police to close the Kamehameha Highway offramp of the H-3 Freeway's Kaneohe-bound lanes.

A flash-flood warning for O'ahu was in effect until 11 p.m.

Police also closed off the right lane of the Kailua-bound Pali Tunnels while crews work to divert rain waters that were rushing into the tunnel, a motorist reported.

At 7:52 p.m. the weather service said radar showed a persistent area of heavy rain from Kane'ohe to Kailua that extends southward. Waikane area residents have reported that rainfall is ponding in some areas, the weather service said.

The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary and rain gauges in St. Stephens and Maunawili show that rain is falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour.

The weather affected power to the Lanikai area, which lost power at 5:20 p.m. Electricity was restored about two hours later to the 1,000 customers affected, said Darren Pai, Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman.
