FEMA says $4 million approved for storm-related damages on Oahu, Kauai

Advertiser Staff

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday that nearly $4 million in federal and state assistance has been approved for individuals, business owners and government agencies for damages from the mid-December storms.

Oahu and Kauai were declared disaster ares in January.

FEMA said it received 1,242 valid applications for aid during a 60-day signup period.

FEMA said 478 Oahu households have been approved for just over $2 million for rental assistance and grants to make owner-occupied structures livable.

In addition, 408 households were approved for $600,000 for disaster-related medical expenses.

The State/FEMA Public Assistance Program also allotted $560,000 to Oahu and Kauai for government-related expenses such as debris removal, and $14,000 for mitigation projects.
