Obit: LA basketball league founder Rod Smith dies at 59

LOS ANGELES — Rod Smith, who founded a summer amateur basketball league that attracted such future NBA stars as Baron Davis and Paul Pierce, has died. He was 59.

Smith died Saturday of a heart attack in suburban West Covina, said his son, David Smith.

Born in Chicago, Smith graduated from a Los Angeles-area high school before attending the University of Southern California.

For more than 30 years, he ran the "Say No Classic," an NCAA-sanctioned summer program in Southern California.

Others who played in the league included Penny Hardaway, Cedric Ceballos and Jordan Farmar, David Smith said.

Rod Smith is survived by his wife. three children, a brother, his mother and three grandchildren.
