Kauai beekeepers host community forum Saturday

NAWILIWILI, Kauai — A community forum Saturday at Kalapaki Beach Park will include information on protecting Kauai honeybees from invasive mites, a candidate forum for Kauai Island Utility Co-op board candidates, and an economic stimulus report from state lawmakers — plus a swap meet.

The day-long event is hosted by the Kauai Beekeeper's Association, which was formed by Kauai beekeepers, community members and government officials to prevent the spread of the Varroa mite to Kauai from Oahu and Hawaii.

The schedule:

9 a.m.-1 p.m. — Swap meet with Zero Waste Kauai.

10-11a.m. — Information about Varroa mite prevention.

11 a.m. -noon — Economic Stimulus report from county and state legislators.

Noon- 2 p.m. — 2009 KIUC Board of Directors candidate forum and community discussion on energy issues.

2-4 p.m. — Kukakuka wrap-up of day's discussion.
