The emperor and empress of Japan will visit Hawai'i in July, the Japan Consul General in Honolulu has confirmed.

Details of the visit have not been finalized, but Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will be stopping in Honolulu on July 14 following a visit to Canada. The couple will remain in Honolulu on July 15 and visit to the Big Island on July 16.

The royal couple will leave for Japan from the Big Island that day, said Hajime Kido, Japan deputy consul general in Honolulu.

The visit is being timed with the 50th anniversary of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation in Hawai'i.

Akihito and Michiko last visited the Islands in June 1994.
