PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The brother of a Providence basketball player who ran onto the court to confront a referee has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading no contest to disorderly conduct.

A Providence District Court judge on Friday sentenced Jonathan Xavier to a three-month suspended sentence followed by six months of probation.

Xavier was charged after coming down from the stands to confront a referee during a Jan. 17 game between Providence and Marquette at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

He was upset that no foul was called after his brother, Jeff Xavier, was hit in the face by a defender's arm while driving to the basket.

Michael Healey, a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch, said prosecutors consider the sentence fair.
