Kauai surfer missing off Anahola

Advertiser Staff

The Coast Guard continues to search for a surfer who was reported missing in waters off Anahola on Kaua'i this afternoon.

The surfer, a 34-year-old Moloa'a man, was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by a large wave and fell off his board at a spot called "Crack 14" located around the bend from Kuna Bay.

The Kaua'i Fire Department and county ocean safety lifeguards began looking for the man and were later joined by Coast Guard rescue crews from Barbers Point on O'ahu.

The fire department suspended its search when darkness fell and said it would resume its search at daybreak tomorrow. The Coast Guard planned to search through the night with its HH-65 helicopter.

The name of the surfer was not released. The Coast Guard said he was wearing red shorts when he went missing.

Anyone with information should contact Coast Guard Sector Honolulu at 808-842-2600.
