Art and music are at the heart of two free family activities this weekend.

Today, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Hawai'i State Art Museum's Second Saturday series features "Art at Play: Musical Pictures, Magical Sculptures, Singing and Telling Tales in the Galleries."

The event features Artist in the Schools educator James McCarthy, who will connect the art in the galleries with storytelling and music. Visitors can also venture outside the museum for a walking tour of architectural treasures in the Capitol Cultural District with historic preservationist Jeff Tripp.

Those who want to get crafty can make a Hawaiian craft, an origami box and a bead bracelet.

The museum galleries will be open for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the gift store Shop@HiSAM will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the restaurant Downtown @ the HiSAM will serve food from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tomorrow, Bank of Hawaii's Family Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts is themed "Rhythm of Life."

Children can learn about the principle of rhythm through various hands-on art activities, along with hours of entertainment including:

• Noon: Irish step dance by Irish Club Hawaii's Celtic Keiki.

• 1:15 and 1:45 p.m.: The Dance Space youth company performs to high-energy music, including a 1950s rock 'n' roll sock hop.

• 2:30 p.m.: Convergence Dance Theatre puts on creative performances such as "BOING," which uses giant rubber bands.

• 3:15 p.m.: The Faith and Praise trio will have listeners clapping to a gospel rhythm.

For more active fun, visitors can go on a scavenger hunt through the museum and those who find all the items win a prize.

And, of course, since it's an Academy event, art will be on view, including exhibits that will be closing soon: "Graphic Cabinet #3: Face to Face" and "Continental Style: Chinese Influence in Japanese Paintings."
