Hawaii endangered, protected species list to be reviewed

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's list of 103 endangered and projected species under the Endangered Species Act will be reviewed by the Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife office.

The public — from citizens to scientists — has 60 days to comment on the list by May 15.

Up for review are one bat, five birds, 41 tree snails and 56 plants.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is required by law to review the endangered or protected species at least once every five years to determine whether a species' classification is still appropriate. If the data are not consistent with current classification, the wildlife service will recommend a change in the federal classification.

For more information on each of the species go to www.fws.gov/endangered/. Questions should be directed to Field Supervisor, Attention: 5-year review, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office, 300 Ala Moana Blvd., Room 3-122, Box 50088, Honolulu, HI 96850. Information or questions also may be e-mailed to pifwo-5yr-review@fws.gov.
