Group gets $250,000 for facility for abuse victims

Gov. Linda Lingle has released a $250,000 grant to Parents And Children Together to purchase a Windward home to use as transitional housing for domestic abuse.

"This transitional housing will provide hope and stability for victims once they have been discharged from crisis shelters and aid them in their emotional aid economic recovery," Lingle said in a March 9 press release.

Two single-family homes in Windward O'ahu are being considered as possible sites for the transitional housing facility for abused women and their children. The project also includes support services to assist women in attain economic self-sufficiency and find permanent housing.

The cost of the home is about $740,000 and would serve up to five families. PACT is pursing other grants to cover the remaining cost. The purchase should be completed in June.

PACT is a nonprofit human service provider that serves more than 11,000 people each year on O'ahu, Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i. It's services include child abuse and domestic violence prevention, mental health support and early childhood education.
