MVT auditions for 'Duck Hunter Shoots Angel' set for March 31

Advertiser Staff

Manoa Valley Theatre is holding auditions for its next production, "Duck Hunter Shoots Man," at 7 p.m. March 30.

The play is scheduled to run May 13 through May 31, with 18 performances. The first rehearsal is tentatively scheduled for April 1.

For more information call MVT at 988-6131.

Paul Mitri will be the production's guest director. The play is written by Mitch Albom, who also penned MVT's current production "Tuesdays with Morrie."

"Duck Hunter Shoots Man" is a story about two bumbling Alabama brothers who believe they shot a celestial being.

As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don't believe any of it until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way.

The comedy interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp.

The show is performed by a cast of eight: five males and two females, plus one male or female. Actors with good comic skills are sought.

Auditions will be comprised of readings from the script. Short, prepared comic monologues can be given, but are not required. Reading the play in advance is strongly recommended.

The following roles are in the show:

Sandy — late 30s to 40s, jaded tabloid journalist.

Lenny — African American, 30ish, tabloid photographer.

Lester — any age, publisher of tabloid.

Duane — any age, Southern duck hunter.

Duwell — any age, Duane's brother, Southern duck hunter.

Woman — mid to late 20s, Southern.

Kansas — 17-year old Southern girl.

Voice/Bank Loan Officer — male or female, mature sounding.

A tentative rehearsal schedule is set to begin April 1.

Performances will be held at Manoa Valley Theatre. Rehearsals will be held at Iolani School, 563 Kamoku Street. The rehearsal schedule will generally be Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays as necessary. Cast members will uniformly receive an honorarium to help defray the out-of-pocket expenses associated with volunteerism and participation in this production. This honorarium is not an offer of employment.
