Cast, opening night gala announced for 'Mamma Mia!'

Opening night of the two-week run of Broadway's smash hit musical "Mamma Mia!" will also be the setting for a gala that will benefit the Women's Cancer Center at Kapi'olani Medical Center.

Tickets to the gala, which is scheduled to take place prior to the opening of the show on May 12, are $100 per person and include VIP seating at the show, as well as an invitation to the after-show cast party at Romano's Macaroni Grill.

The cast for the traveling show, which is based on the songs of ABBA and was was made into a film last year starring Meryl Streep and Pearce Brosnan, was also announced today. It will include Broadway actress Michelle Dawson, whose credits include parts in "Ragtime," "Showboat," "Cyrano" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," playing the role of single mom Donna Sheridan.

Liana Hunt will make her national tour debut as Donna's engaged-to-be-married daughter, Sophie, who is on the hunt — though secretly — for her birth father who she hopes will appear in time to walk her down the aisle. She has the identity of her father narrowed down to three of her mother's past beaus. For this production, the three men will be played by John Hemphill, Martin Kildare and Michael Aaron Lindner.

"Mamma Mia!" runs through May 24 with performances at 7:30 p.m.Tuesdays through Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets for the show are priced at $75, $65 and $40 for weekdays and Sunday evenings; $85, $75 and $50 for Friday and Saturday performances and Sunday matinees. Group sales, with discounts available for 15 or more, are available through the Hawaii Opera Theatre Box Office at 593-2468, with no discounts available for Friday or Saturday evening performances. There are special discounts for groups, students and Scouts and senior groups. Military will receive a 10 percent discount with ID, exclusive of Friday and Saturday evenings.
