WASHINGTON — In a career studded with historic firsts, President Obama is preparing for yet another: hitting the late-night comedy circuit to pitch his economic recovery plan.

By taking a seat Thursday night on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Obama will become the first sitting president to appear in such an unlikely venue — though he's visited Leno before. He made his first "Tonight Show" appearance in December 2006, when he was plotting his White House bid.

The appearance will extend Obama's habit of speaking past the Washington media and ditching the capital for events that distance him from the Beltway status quo.

LOHAN WON'T BE GOING TO JAIL

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Lindsay Lohan's next appearance won't be in jail garb.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge yesterday quashed an arrest warrant that was issued Friday for the 22-year-old "Mean Girls" star.

Judge Marsha N. Revel determined that the actress has been complying with the terms of her probation but needs to show her treatment program better documentation to avoid future court problems. The judge also noted that Lohan has not failed any drug or alcohol tests.

Lohan's attorney said after the hearing that the confusion stemmed from the actress switching treatment programs.

SAMBERG TO HOST MOVIE AWARDS

NEW YORK — "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg will host the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.

It will be Samberg's first time as host of the event, to air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif., on May 31.

Samberg says he grew up watching the awards and was a writer for the show before landing his gig on "SNL," so "it will be a sweet and satisfying homecoming. I can't wait to act really important."

Samberg, 30, has appeared on the NBC sketch comedy show for four seasons, building a fan base with quirky video shorts featuring himself, fellow "SNL" players and celebrity guests such as Justin Timberlake and Natalie Portman.

IT'S A BOY FOR NEW DAD CARSON DALY

LOS ANGELES- Talk show host Carson Daly has a new full-time guest.

Daly's publicist said the 35-year-old TV personality and girlfriend Siri Pinter are the proud parents of a baby boy. Jackson James Daly was born Sunday, weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces. It's the first child for both the "Last Call with Carson Daly" host and Pinter, who has worked at Daly's show and "Last Comic Standing" as an associate producer.
