MAUI
County cracking down on unpaid refuse bills

Maui County officials said residents delinquent in their home refuse pickup payments have until Friday to bring their accounts up to date.

Accounts that have not been paid in full by 4 p.m. will be closed immediately and a $30 service fee assessed for any accounts that are reopened, officials with the county Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division, have announced.

Refuse bills of $84 for the period of Jan. 1 to June 30, 2009 were due Feb. 13. As of March 6, there were about 2,200 delinquent residential refuse accounts.

Payments may be dropped off at the Refuse & Landfill Accounts office at One Main Plaza in Wailuku, 2200 Main St., Suite 175. For more information, call the Solid Waste Billing Section at 270-1731.
